Chapter XVII

OF OFFENCES AGAINST PROPERTY

Of Extortion

Putting person in fear of death or of grievous hurt, in order to commit extortion
387. Whoever, in order to the committing of extortion, puts or attempts to put any person in fear of death or of grievous hurt to that person or to any other, shall be punished with imprisonment 2[for life and shall not be less than seven years], and shall also be liable to fine.

    Throughout this Act, except otherwise provided, the words “Bangladesh”, “Government”, “the Government” and “Taka” were substituted, for the words “Pakistan”, “Central or any Provincial Government” or “Central Government or any Provincial Government” or “Central Government” or “the Provincial Government” or “Provincial Government” and “rupees” respectively by section 3 and 2nd Schedule of the Bangladesh Laws (Revision And Declaration) Act, 1973 (Act No. VIII of 1973).

    The words “for life and shall not be less than seven years” were substituted, for the words “of either description for a term which may extend to seven years” by section 4 of the Penal Code (Amendment) Act, 1991 (Act No. XV of 1991)
