The Dowry Prohibition Act, 1980

Penalty for demanding dowry
4. If any person, after the commencement of this Act, demands, directly or indirectly, from the parents or guardian of a bride or bridegroom, as the case may be, any dowry, he shall be punishable with imprisonment which may extend to 1[five years and shall not be less than one year, or with fine, or with both].

    The words and commas “five years and shall not be less than one year, or with fine, or with both” were substituted for the words and commas “one year, or with fine which may extend to five thousand taka, or with both” by section 3 of the Dowry Prohibition (Amendment) Ordinance, 1986 (Ordinance No. XXVI of 1986)
