Composition of Union Parishads
5. 1[(1) A Union Parishad shall consist of a Chairman and twelve members including three members exclusively reserved for women.]
 
 
 
 
(2) 2[Subject to the provisions of sub-section (3), the Chairman and members] shall be elected by direct election on
 
 
the basis of adult franchise in accordance with the provisions of this Ordinance and the rules.
 
 
 
 
3[(3) There shall be reserved three seats exclusively for women members in each Union Parishad, hereinafter referred to as reserved seats, who shall be elected by direct election on the basis of adult franchise in accordance with the provisions of this Ordinance and the rules:
 
 
 
 
Provided that nothing in this sub-section shall prevent a woman from being elected to any of the nine general seats provided for in sub-section (1).]
 
 
 
 
(4) The Chairman of a Union Parishad shall also be deemed to be a member of the Parishad.
 
 
 
 
(5) There shall be paid to the Chairman and members of a Union Parishad such honorarium as may be determined by the Government.
