The Dowry Prohibition Act, 1980
( ACT NO. XXXV OF 1980 )
[ 26th December, 1980 ]
An Act to prohibit the taking or giving of dowry in marriages.
WHEREAS it is expedient to make provision to prohibit the taking or giving of dowry in marriages;
It is hereby enacted as follows:-
Short title and commencement
1. (1) This Act may be called the
Dowry Prohibition Act, 1980
.
(2) It shall come into force on such date as the Government may, by notification in the official Gazette, appoint.
